Resolving Royalty Mispayment Problems:  A Discussion of Common Mispayment Scenarios and Applicable Law

Biography:

Daniel Mathis is a Senior Attorney in the Oklahoma City office of Devon Energy Production Company, L.P. At Devon, Mr. Mathis focuses on transactional and operational matters in Devon’s Onshore Exploration and Production Division, focusing on Eagle Ford operations. Prior to joining Devon, Mr. Mathis was associated with the Arlington, Texas civil litigation law firm of Curnutt & Hafer, L.L.P. There, he represented various clients in oil and gas matters, commercial litigation, and insurance disputes.

Mr. Mathis is a cum laude graduate of the Ole Miss School of Law, where he was a Dean’s List Scholar and a member of Phi Delta Phi. He is also a cum laude graduate of Mississippi State University, where he obtained his undergraduate degree in Business Administration, with minors in Political Science and Economics.

Mr. Mathis is active in a number of professional and community organizations. He is a current member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, the Oklahoma County Bar Association, and the Oklahoma City Mineral Lawyers Society. He is a past President and Vice President of the Arlington Young Lawyers Association, is a member of the Houston Bar, Dallas Bar, Tarrant County Bar, and the State Bar of Texas Energy Sections, and is a member of the Institute for Energy Law’s Young Professionals in Energy Committee. From 2010–12, Mr. Mathis served on the Planning Committee for the annual Energy Symposium sponsored by the Texas Wesleyan School of Law, where he was also an author and presenter. Mr. Mathis has also completed an associate membership in the Eldon B. Mahon Inn of Court and is a Fellow of the Tarrant County Bar Foundation.

In 2012, Mr. Mathis was named one of Fort Worth’s “40 Under 40” honorees by the Fort Worth Business Press. In 2010 and 2012, he was selected for inclusion in Texas Super Lawyers® - Rising Stars Edition in the category of Energy & Natural Resources, and in 2011 he was named a “Fort Worth Top Lawyer” in the area of Oil and Gas by Fort Worth, Texas Magazine.

Mr. Mathis is licensed to practice law in all state courts of Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, and Mississippi, but is presently only practicing in Texas and Oklahoma. He is a frequent speaker on royalty mispayment law, having presented on this topic more than a dozen times to various industry groups.
